Forklift to the Rescue: Cab Freed from Streetcar Track in Tucson

Forklifts are the classic unsung heroes. Collectively, they lift millions of pounds of freight on a daily basis. Individually, a forklift usually stays away from the limelight, doing work that only a few people (other forklift operators, supervisors, truck drivers) see. Most of the time, a forklift’s heavy lifting is done behind the scenes.

That’s why it was good to see a forklift out in the open last week in Arizona. This particular lift helped extricate a cab from streetcar tracks.

It happened on Super Bowl Sunday in Tucson, not too far from where the big game was being played in Scottsdale. But instead of on-the-field heroics, this one involved a highly skilled forklift driver at the top of his game.

A local operations manager was responsible for moving the cab.  But he’s no ordinary driver. He’s a certified operator and trainer with forklifts.

The car, owned by ABC Cabs, had starter trouble. A tow truck was called to move the cab, but people started getting restless after 30 minutes.

After discussing the situation with the Tucson Police Department and the cab driver, a solution was hatched: the forklift was the best option available.

The operations manager picked the back axle of the car up and moved it into middle turning lane, out of the way of traffic and the streetcar. A tow truck eventually arrived, but was no longer needed.
